Charles Heintz is quite an iconic Chardonnay vineyard in Sonoma County. Ted Lemon was the first to make a vineyard-designated bottling from the site - he’s been working with Charlie longer than almost anyone. The vines were planted in 1982 from what was then called Clone 108, a partially heat-treated old Wente selection that was further cleaned to produce Clone 4, though Ted will tell you 'nobody really knows exactly what’s out there anymore.' The 2024 vintage shows a beautiful golden hue, which is quite an impact for such a young wine. The nose is nicely aromatic, with notes of juicy ripe apples, quince paste, a touch of citrus herbs like tarragon, and a hint of tropical notes. On the palate, it is round and giving with a nice acidity that pushes through to a lengthy, powerful finish. There’s no new oak here to distract from any of it - just the fruit, the place, and everything that 40-plus years of old Wente vines can give you.
