Tasted from barrel, the fruit for the Howell Mountain comes from the Limitless Vineyard in the Los Posadas District. Three clones from this site make up the blend: Clone 341, which retains acidity beautifully with botanical and fruit-driven depth; Clone 337, bringing richness and concentration; and Clone 191, adding an elegant herbaceous character. Aged for 19 months in 54% new French oak (Taransaud), with an ABV of 14.1%, this wine marks a distinct evolution from previous iterations under the leadership of winemaker Zach Watkins. This serious, complex wine shows impressive tension alongside pure red, black, and blue fruit. There’s nuance and great expression, reflecting a true sense of place. This is an exciting moment for the winery, as these wines take on a stronger identity. Slated for release around 2027, I will revisit this wine before its debut.
