Lot No. 1 returns in 2023 with fruit from Longwood Ranch in southern Napa, farmed organically. Winemaker Zach Watkins explains that the exceptional quality of tannin from this site persuaded the team to bottle it on its own this year – a shift from the original Lot No. 1 concept, which aimed to portray Napa through its principal mountain sites rather than spotlight a single vineyard. The wine is aged with two-thirds in barriques for one year, the balance in used puncheons. The tannins are strikingly dynamic and robust, building in the glass alongside inky dark berry and mulberry fruit, wild herb nuance, and resolving through impressive length. There is genuine tension and elegance throughout, signalling a compelling evolution for this bottling.
