While this wine is typically darker and fuller in flavour, the 2023 clearly reflects the cool growing season, showing marked elegance and lightness. Crisp red raspberry and cranberry fruit mingle with refined cedar, sage, tobacco, and hints of liquorice, along with a touch of fresh fennel. Firm tannins frame the palate, while lifted, focused acidity carries the wine with energy. The overall impression is one of striking elegance, almost like a light-bodied claret, yet with genuinely lovely depth of flavour and a long, structured finish. Sourced from old vines planted in 1982 on the steep, east-facing Phoenix Vineyard hillside of ancient marine shale soils, CCOF Certified Organic, just 435 cases were produced. The wine was aged for 20 months in roughly 20% new French oak before finishing in Stockinger foudres to preserve aromatics and freshness.
