The site, La Mekerra Vineyard, at 2,300–2,500 feet elevation, with its heavy clay soils, is incredibly unique, even more so than Peter Michael, which sits below this site. Barrel fermented and barrel aged with mostly indigenous yeast, the wine is aged in cigar barrels, which are about 70 gallons instead of the usual 59 gallons, for 18–20 months. This wine is ultra-fresh, bright, and precision-focused in this vintage. It’s one of the absolute best Sauvignon Blancs that Philippe and Cherie Melka have produced. The acidity is friendly and intense, like biting into a fresh lemon or lime, intensely flavourful on the palate with ripe fruit notes layered with subtle oak spices, along with apricot and white floral notes, leading to an extended medium-bodied finish. Just spectacular.
