A surprise hit in our blind tasting, Inkblot costs one fifth of many of the other wines and is from a Central Valley AVA where land prices and grape prices are a fraction of those in Napa and Sonoma. The pretty side of Cabernet Franc: juicy blueberry fruit, sleekness and a violetty arc of flavour, some meadowy notes rather than ‘green’. Owners Michael and David Phillips are fifth-generation growers, and the brothers say they don't take themselves too seriously – but this is a seriously good Franc.
