A co-fermentation of three Syrah clones—a suitcase clone from Hermitage (ENTAV), along with clones 867 and 473—planted at 600 feet (183 metres) in elevation and trimmed to a single cluster per shoot, with shoulders removed to enhance concentration. The wine is fermented roughly one-third in puncheons and the balance in stainless steel using punch-downs only, then aged for up to 18 months, with half the wine in 50% new French oak and the remainder in used barrels. Morlet harvests all three Syrah parcels simultaneously, embracing the differing ripeness levels from each clone and zone so that, through co-fermentation, the components knit together into a more complex whole. Portions of the nose lift with beautiful spicy and lightly roasted notes, revealing white pepper, violet, lavender, and peony aromatics, alongside hints of charcuterie and bacon fat, all layered with black cherry fruit and a bouquet garni character that adds further complexity. Long inspired by Côte-Rôtie’s La Landonne style (entirely Syrah yet built on layered nuance from different parcels), the wine shows beautiful refinement on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins and wonderfully juicy acidity providing energy and tension.
