From the 2.4 hectares of planted vines rooted in rocky loam and volcanic ash–red soils of the Mon Chevalier vineyard in Knights Valley, rising to 182 metres in elevation, comes this blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Merlot. Fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and puncheons, the wine is aged for 17 months in 85% new French oak. Unfined and unfiltered, Mon Chevalier is named after Luc and Jodie Morlet’s son, Paul (their ‘Knight’). The Knights Valley character leaps from the glass, revealing sous-bois, dark loamy earth, black truffle, and forest notes wrapped around a beautifully lush core of dark berry fruit. Ultra-fine tannins are already nicely integrated in the wine’s youth, leading to a finish touched by smoked paprika and carried by a persistent thread of inky dark berry fruit. Plush, soft, and generous, it has impressive length. What a showing in 2023.
