A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged for 12 months in 30% new French oak. The fruit is sourced from the Rutherford valley floor, with additional parcels from a Gallo-owned vineyard in Pope Valley. This wine is a true amalgamation of the Napa Cabernet styles Dave Phinney is known for, as he told me while tasting it at Louis M. Martini in early December 2025. ‘When I still owned The Prisoner, the lots that didn’t make it into Papillon or The Prisoner were often blended here,’ he explained. ‘We always made it really well, using expensive fruit aged in expensive oak.’ That pedigree shows in the lavish, opulent palate, layered with dark fruit, sweet spices, and toasty French oak that’s beautifully integrated. The finish is long and chocolaty, marked by dark fruit and sweet spice. Once again in 2024, as with many of Dave’s wines, there’s a brightness and lift here that’s completely off the charts.
