A Pinot Noir from Dave Phinney, the mastermind who, years ago, created The Prisoner, sold it off, and continued making mind-bending red blends bottled behind eye-catching wine labels. Here, it's all about Pinot Noir. "We made ten vintages of Pinot Noir before we ever bottled any," says Dave Phinney, who tasted these wines with me at the Louis M. Martini Winery in St. Helena. Phinney also owns a vineyard in Santa Barbara, and I suspect this wine is infused with some of that fruit, given its fragrant, candied-cherry and rose-petal accents. The wine builds on the full-bodied palate with juicy, flesh cherry and plum, blood-orange acidity, and consistent, year-after-year nuances of vanilla and coriander spice.
