Winemaker Austin Peterson says that adding Cabernet Franc was essential to the Ovid wine. In the spirit of an experimental journey, the founders blended Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, knowing it was unconventional for Napa then. Dana Johnson came up with the idea to call it Experiment, and the wine isn’t intended to serve as a second label; it’s a wine of intention as much as the flagship. This 2005 Experiment K 1.5 benefited from the Petit Verdot, as there is plenty of energy, lift, structure, and density to this 17-year aged red. The nose is still tight, needing some aeration to present inky dark fruit, tobacco, dried sagebrush, earth and vanilla aromas. Rich, mouth-filling, and surprisingly youthful, overflowing with inky dark, blue fruit notes accompanied by chocolate and intense layers of salty minerals and crushed mountain stones. There’s a buoyancy to the wine that belies the deep concentration of the fruit. In addition to the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, about 1% of Cabernet Sauvignon is blended into the mix.
