Peay's Scallop Shelf is a great overview of the full expression of the estate in Annapolis, very far north in the West Sonoma Coast. Not a single block, but a blend coming from most of the Pinot Noir clones the property grows, mainly Pommard, which gives the wine its lifted, red-fruited, citrusy character. At 13.4%, it tastes of rooibos tea and blood orange, with a thread of orange peel and white pepper running through the finish. The acidity is high and mouthwatering, while the tannins are fine and unobtrusive. Still a touch tight right now, but already delicious. It's the kind of wine that rewards an hour in the glass as it evolves quickly.
