From a vineyard that quite literally straddles a peak on Howell Mountain, perched at 640m along a ridgeline facing into Napa Valley, the site is defined by iron-rich, severely depleted volcanic soils, organically farmed, no-till, and surrounded by forest. The wine was aged 22 months in 33% new French oak. This is Howell Mountain reimagined – a wine that makes you fall in love with the region all over again, but in an entirely different way. Gorgeously red-fruited, with rose petal nuances and a symphony of mineral intensity evocative of walking through a redwood grove, it carries notes of loamy earth and redwood bark, alongside vivid tobacco and elegant cedarwood character. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, mineral-laced tannins frame a surge of blood-orange acidity, revealing a charming, vibrant and energetic expression of what is possible atop Howell Mountain. Far from a simple steak-and-potatoes wine, it has the acid verve to cut through even the most tender filet mignon, perhaps even acting as the salt itself were the dish under-seasoned. Jonah Beer describes the wine as a “reverse-engineered” vision of the Howell Mountain wines of Lee Stewart’s original Chateau Souverain – imagining what they might have been like in their youth. Just gorgeous. Pilcrow’s first vintage was 2014; the label is co-owned by Sara and Jonah Beer.
