This Zinfandel comes from the Lagier-Meredith Vineyard, which Aaron Pott acquired in 2022. The site, planted to Mondeuse and Zinfandel, was established by Dr Carole Meredith, the pioneering researcher whose work using genetic markers at UC Davis helped trace the origins and parentage of varieties including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Zinfandel. The vines were planted in 1993, and Pott, who once helped establish the vineyard’s cover crop and occasionally tended the site, now brings his relationship with the property full circle. In the same vein as the famous Zinfandels from Sonoma’s Monte Rosso Vineyard, this mountain-grown example is juicy and vibrant, aged for 21 months in neutral oak. In 2023, the wine is not only delicious but strikingly fresh, with bracing, juicy acidity and compact richness across the palate, making it an ideal dinner-table wine with remarkable versatility. It bursts with juicy red and black berry fruit layered with brown baking spice, elegant wood notes, and dark chocolate, finishing with hints of raspberry compote and unsweetened cocoa powder on a long finish. It has a Pinot Noir like elegance and balance. You may be very surprised by the elegance of this wine.
