Aaron Pott explains that this wine emerged from his work with the Lagier-Meredith Vineyard: ‘I needed a place to put wine that I didn’t want in the final blend of my Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, so I thought, let’s see if I could take those components and make a nice $40 entry-level blend.’ The wine is native-fermented in stainless steel and aged for 20 months in 50% new French oak. The entirely estate-grown blend includes 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. Very easy-drinking and among the lighter wines Aaron produces, it offers succulent red and black fruit character supported by plenty of energising acidity, with underlying brown baking spice and elegant cedarwood notes. Above all, it remains fully Napa Valley in character. One of the best sub-$50 Napa Valley red blends I have tasted in a long time. Hats off to Pott for the pricing, and one hopes others in the valley take note.
