For a wine that is typically inky black, bold and earthy, with positively firm tannins that need bottle age to soften, this 2022 is incredibly approachable and quite delicious. Its excellent structure is especially impressive given the challenges of intense heat in this vintage, which tended to create monotone wines that are soft and very drinkable. Here, complexity reigns, with blue fruit and cherry compote intertwined with fragrant earth, dark brown Indian spices and fine cedarwood. The wine is medium-bodied, supple and juicy, with a mouthwatering freshness that’s hard to resist even as the tannins build with some firmness on the finish. This certainly ranks among the best Napa Cabernets of the 2022 vintage. The wine was aged in a mix of about 50% French oak barrels and 50% concrete vessels. The Tesseron family, owners of Château Pontet-Canet in Bordeaux, purchased the estate in 2016. Previously, it was owned by the late actor Robin Williams, who planted the vines in the late 1990s. Jérôme Ledit is the estate manager, and the late Michel Rolland had been the consultant oenologist. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and have been dry-farmed since 2016.
