Of all the Read Holland Chardonnays, the Peter Martin Ray bottling from a historic Santa Cruz Mountains site shows a depth and radiance that is particularly captivating. At six years on (tasted August of 2024), this Chardonnay shows a stunning depth and is gorgeous from a texture point of view. Deep golden with rich, honeyed aromatics, filigreed salty sea air minerality and a deep, freshly cut Meyer lemon fruitiness. The palate is creamy with lemon curd, honeyed apricot flesh and tangy, sappy Meyer lemon pulp depth. The salinity is present, though it's shifting into a supporting role (in comparison to the 2021 bottling). This wine comes from nearly 50-year-old Chardonnay vines, head-trained in the Santa Cruz Mountains. ‘This heritage clone of Chardonnay, called Mt. Eden, was brought to California from France in the late 1890s by Paul Masson,’ says winemaker Ashley Holland.
