From the famed Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, owner Jason Rebrook secured fruit from D Block, positioned farther from Highway 29 and closer to the foothills. In 2023, under the direction of Julien Fayard, the wine is particularly expressive and vibrant. Cedarwood is handled with elegance and restraint, beautifully calibrated to frame layers of blackberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, while sagebrush lends a savoury lift. The palate is defined by ultra-fine, gently sweet tannins, energised by a firm spine of juicy acidity, and the finish carries a fine graphite minerality. Fruit integrity remains strikingly fresh, with crunchy skin tannins that seem to elevate the wine and amplify its tension, even at a slightly higher pH. A fabulous effort.
