Gemstone previously produced a Chardonnay, winemaker Julien Fayard tells me, and Rebrook, the owner of Gemstone and Facets, was excited by the opportunity to secure fruit from this site. Having watched the evolution of California Chardonnay, Rebrook wanted to put his own stamp on the style after spending time with Fayard in France, exploring what could be achieved with high-elevation fruit from Fort Ross Vineyard, shaped by its altitude and close proximity to the ocean. The grapes are barrel-fermented with full malolactic fermentation and aged for 14 months in French oak, 60% new. The wine is super-elegant and expressive, showing bright citrus character framed by brown baking spices, silky textures, and lacy acidity. The flavours are boldly rich yet beautifully balanced and light on their feet, defined more by wet-stone minerality than by a purely saline-acid backbone. There is a striking coolness to the wine, with impressive length and a cool, mineral-driven finish. Crisp, vivid orchard and stone fruit notes carry seamlessly from the aromatics through to the finish, remaining bright and expressive throughout.
