The 2023 Rebrook Cellars Fort Ross Vineyard Pinot Noir is bold and richly textured, layered with dark fruit, Asian spices, elegant cedarwood, and espresso bean character, and rose petal nuances, all balanced by earthy, stony mineral notes and firm, ripe tannins that resolve gracefully around a fine spine of saline-acid tension. I love the interplay of tension and texture in this wine. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir, aged for 14 months in 60% new French oak, primarily François Frères. Texas-based owner Jason Rebrook, inspired by Wayfarer’s world-class Pinot Noirs, aspires to craft a truly exceptional expression, noting, ‘Pinot Noirs are big in Texas, and my friends love them. I believe Fort Ross-Seaview is the best place to grow grapes to make world-class Pinot Noir.’ Fort Ross Vineyard is a 52-acre site bordering Flowers, situated at 1,600 feet overlooking the ocean. The site benefits from daily warmth once the marine layer burns off, while persistent ocean breezes provide cooling, creating ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Winemaker Julien Fayard sources fruit from a block directly exposed to the ocean breezes, planted to Pommard clones known for their long hang time, blending it with Calera clones from higher on the site and Clone 115, which contributes sweetness and roundness. Fort Ross Vineyard, owned by Lester Schwartz, continues to prove its place as one of California’s premier sites for Pinot Noir.
