From Mike and Kara Dunn comes Los Abuelos—Spanish for ‘grandparents’—the name of Mike’s family estate Petite Sirah vineyard, dedicated to his stepfather and mother, Randy and Lori Dunn. Mike planted the vineyard in 2004 using budwood from the Park Muscadine Vineyard on Howell Mountain. After ten years in a bottle, it’s wonderfully sumptuous and earthy, with a gravelly mineral character, dark forest earth, pine, ironstone, graphite and dried florals. The tannins remain burly yet neatly stacked, framing a plump, juicy, intensely black-fruited wine. The finish is the real kicker—it goes on and on for a full 60 seconds, awash in muddled black fruit, cassis, currant and earth.
