I have been delighted with a recent purchase of some 1993 Ridge Monte Bello. The bouquet is mature now, with more truffle, cedar, leather, and game notes than primary fruit, but the overall impression is luscious. The texture is silken, yet the tannin-acid balance is still impeccable, and the wine holds on for a long finish, even when tasted with steak au poivre. Although the wine is a bit more mature than thirty-year-old Bordeaux would be, the overall effect is elegant and should hold for some time at this level.
