Established in 1972, Rutherford Hill was among Napa Valley’s early champions of Merlot, its founders recognising similarities between the local growing conditions and those of Pomerol. The Terlato family acquired the hillside winery in 1996 and subsequently invested in its vineyards and extensive cellars. The 2023 Winemaker’s Blend maintains that Merlot emphasis, with fruit sourced from select sites throughout Napa, joining 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Jonathan Cristaldi: Vivid, with pure fruit notes, graphite and spearmint, black cherry. Expressive and layered, full of Merlot-like qualities, not overshadowed by oak or overly ripe grapes. Great effort. Jenica Flippo: Rich and ripe red and dark fruits, juicy and intense. The fruit holds the oak well, with mild spices, savoury sage and thyme. Tannins are plush and plump, and the finish lingers. Cara Patricia: Delicious and rounded, showing plenty of personality and bright, clean fruit flavours along with excellent structure.
