Though winemaker Tegan Passalacqua doesn't vineyard-designate his wines, this Sandlands Mataro comes entirely from the Oakley Road vineyard, unofficially named by Joel Peterson. The dry-farmed site sits in the windy, sandy Contra Costa delta and delivers a wine that shows power without weight. Lightly floral and saline, followed by notes of tart blackberry, plum skin, dried herbs and earthiness. A mineral thread runs through it, with fine-grained tannins and a light grip carrying a fresh, spicy, long finish. A delicious wine with an unmistakable sense of place.
