The Heritage Clone To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is famously sourced from the low-yielding N2S block, planted in the late 1980s. This distinctive clone–isolated by viticulturist Phil Freese and made available through the University of California, Davis – has garnered considerable attention. ‘It reminds me of Clone 6 out of Block D2 in Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, which was the basis for Old Sparky,’ says winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. ‘This wine shares that density and intrigue. There’s an exoticness that separates this out of what else we make from To Kalon and builds to Old Sparky, which is half N2S.’ In 2023, the wine is full-bodied, dense, powerful, and polished, driven by ironstone mineral tension and velvety-textured tannins that are ultra-fine and deeply integrated. That mineral character carries seamlessly across the palate, finishing with scorched-earth notes and building tannins that retain a fresh, inviting, and distinctly mineral-rich quality through the finish.
