Winemaker Jesse Fox joined Sequoia Grove in 2022 after a long stint at Amici Cellars and lengthy stays at Ram's Gate Winery and Harlan's Napa Valley Reserve. This is his first set of wines that are entirely designed with his vision for Sequoia Grove's portfolio, and the white and reds are just phenomenal, with a welcome return to the kind of savoury character and textural elegance that was such a signature of the winery's wines more than a decade prior. From the 21ha Haire Vineyard in Carneros comes this blend of Robert Young and Old Wente clone Chardonnay grapes. Native ferment in barrel is followed by 10 months on the lees in one-third new French oak. Racking is in late July and August. Bottled unfiltered. It is such a seductive, savoury, and expressive Chardonnay with tremendous staying power. A bit of gunflint, lemon zest, brown spices, honeycomb, and ascendent white floral freshness leads to a deep and creamy mid-palate of apricot fruit, yellow apple, and more lemon zest, gesturing in a bit of grip—a great example of a profoundly flavourful California Chardonnay with brightness and light.
