The Expedition is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in 43% new French oak and sourced entirely from the winery’s Base Camp Vineyard in Oak Knoll, produced by Andy Erickson of Screaming Eagle and Favia fame. Readers might note that as of the 2023 vintage, Morgan Maurèze has assumed the role of winemaker. It's a lovely, nice wine in 2021 that readers will want to hold onto while drinking up the 2020 vintage. Even in that tough year, 2020 was a spectacular wine, and in 2021, it's firing on all cylinders. Erickson balances the deep fruit concentration of the low-yielding vintage with incredible precision and freshness in its black fruit purity, finding a perfect segue from its expressive bouquet to a full-bodied palate that is layered with very ripe and robust tannins, which build with intensity as the wine unspools in waves of mineral-laced black fruits, cigar box, white pepper, clove, and dried herbs.
