The 2005 Padrone, as Ray recalls, was very elegant and Bordeaux-like in its youth—much like the 2023, thanks to a cooler season and a larger crop that kept the wine from becoming heavy or bombastic. There’s more stuffing here than in 2006, with firmer, more structured tannins shining through. The bouquet is rich and bold, carrying notes of dark fruit, loamy earth, and a hint of graphite, while the finish shows black truffle and umami depth. There’s a wonderful coolness and composure to this vintage—at 14.1% ABV, it’s beautifully balanced and clearly built to go the distance.
