The 2003 Padrone, as Ray recalls, began life somewhat disjointed and angular but has evolved beautifully with time in the bottle. It now shows impressive texture and a youthful energy, its soaring tannins still powerful yet refined, carrying a sweet black tea character. Currant fruit comes forward on the palate, joined by an appealing umami richness that adds depth and savour. Full-bodied and expressive, it’s a testament to how well this vintage has aged—and, admittedly, by this point in the tasting, the wines only seemed to be getting better.
