The ‘Élu’ (French for ‘elected’ or ‘selected’) is rounded out with small additions of Malbec (2%) and Cabernet Franc (2%). Winemaker Michael Scholz explains that the aim has always been to craft a wine of power, density, and presence, but with an undeniable charm. With Michel Rolland consulting on blending at the winery for many years, the two first developed this cuvée together in 1994. The wine is fermented across a mix of vessels and aged for 19 months in approximately 50% new French oak, with the majority of the fruit sourced from Dollarhide Ranch and the Merlot and Cabernet Franc drawn from Rutherford. In the glass, it delivers a heady mix of red-berry fruit and warming baking spice, layered with pretty rose petals and violet florals. The palate builds with juicy richness, framed by precise, beautifully integrated tannins that support the bright, upfront fruit. A core of blood-orange acidity carries through to a long, graphite-laced finish marked with sagebrush and wild thyme.
