Old Wente Clone Chardonnay from the famed Hyde Vineyard in Carneros is blended here with Calera Clone, first introduced into the cuvée in 2019. Aged for 15 months in a mix of high-quality French oak, 50% new, the wine is native-yeast fermented, barrel fermented and undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation, with winemaker Jeff Ames noting that the proportion of Calera in the blend continues to increase. In 2023, the wine shows impressive breadth and depth, building layers of lemon curd and candied ginger, sumptuous blonde toast, buttered croissant and refined French pastry notes. Salted lemon peel and good phenolic grip that adds precision and structure, carrying through to the lingering finish. There is noticeably more tension and energy in the Cuvée Susan in 2023, so if tasting both Cuvée Torchiana and Cuvée Susan side by side, start with the softer, more immediately generous Torchiana and segue into dinner with the more driven Susan.
