Trespass Vineyard, a small site near David Abreu’s Madrona Ranch and Spottswoode in St Helena, is home to 25-year-old vines. Kirk Venge has made the wines since 2003. The wine was aged for 22 months in 76% new French oak, with just six barrels produced. A classically fashioned Cabernet, it reveals blackberry fruit and graphite notes with an ultra-silky, satiny palate expression, perhaps partly driven by elevated alcohol. Yet for all that intensity, there is plenty to admire here, and when served at cellar temperature, it shows a cooling thread of Cabernet herbaceousness redolent of sagebrush and thyme, that lifts the wine. Best enjoyed with burgers, ribeye, or hearty stews.
