Mario’s Vineyard is the 4-hectare site that surrounds the winery off Highway 29, just north of St. Helena. This Cabernet Sauvignon is drawn from two blocks situated closest to the highway, on either side of the driveway leading into the estate. Planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 7 on SO4 and St. George rootstocks, the soils differ slightly—Bale Clay Loam on the north side and Pleasanton Clay Loam to the south. The final blend includes small portions of Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This red opens with crunchy black cherry, blackberry and raspberry fruit, layered with warm Indian spices, dusty minerality and dark chocolate, alongside notes of violets, sagebrush, subtle saddle leather and tobacco. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, it’s defined by ultra-fine tannins, cocoa powder richness, and crushed red-rock minerality that drive a long, deeply intense finish. Fermented in stainless steel, and then racked to roughly 50% new French oak with medium plus toasts for the most part for 19 months.
