‘The ’76 was an answer to a price point we were missing,’ says Kirk Venge, noting that it is released at US$76. Sourced from a number of sites across the valley floor, benchlands, and mountain vineyards – including parcels on Pritchard Hill – the wine is aged for 22 months in two-thirds new French oak. Unctuous and creamy on the palate, it is underpinned by powerfully tight-knit tannins and dark chocolate notes, alongside ripe, oozing blackberry and black cherry fruit, with nuances of incense carrying through the full-bodied finish. Quite enjoyable and enticing, with a satiny, plush expression supported by those burly tannins.
