Vine Hill Ranch is a great site, and the Phillips family are thoughful farmers, but my sense is some of this wine's potential is occluded by its hearty dose of new Darnajou barrels and an enthusiastic extraction of the vintage's plentiful tannins. There is a lot to admire here in the wine's complex and brooding fruit tones, but right now Françoise Peschon's hand seems just a little heavy.
