This Pinot from Filigreen Farm, a 39-hectare Demeter-certified biodynamic site in Anderson Valley, just outside of Boonville, was aged for 16 months in French oak. The 2023 growing season was long and cold, and the concentration here is lacking because of it, compared to the 2022 release, which is fuller and fruitier. It’s still a very pretty wine (almost too pretty) and very easy to drink, as are all the Waits-Mast wines, which bear an elegant intensity. Here, mixed-berry fruit is laced with brown baking spices, supported by generally soft, approachable tannins that build through the medium-bodied palate. Savoury notes of fennel and cedar spices emerge on the finish. The winery was established in 2005 by Brian Mast and Jennifer Waits. Winemaker Shalini Sekhar, a Fresno State graduate who previously worked at Williams Selyem and Copain, joined the team in 2013.
