The saturated purple colour here comes from the fact that Saperavi is a teinturier grape (the pulp and juice are red); Fred Frank notes that it doesn't need extended skin contact to get colour, a useful characteristic in the less-than-pristine conditions of 2021. The Frank vineyards produced a juicy, vibrant wine with exuberant blackberry fruit, a floral edge and impressive freshness. Not for long ageing, but lovely to drink now.
