One of the oldest sites in the Rocks District was planted between 1996 and 1998, with a bit more than 4 acres of Cab, and these were the first Cabernet vines in the appellation. Once known as Stone Valley, the vineyard was acquired by Tom Waliser; it’s now known as San Tomasso after him. ‘We didn’t know anything about this vineyard when we bought it, but we were impressed with the wines,’ says David Wanek, proprietor. There’s a purity of fruit and mineral precision here, but the elegant mountain herbal character really stands out on the aromatics. Bay leaf and fir tips lift up intense dark fruits. Savoury and structured on the palate, with deep baking spice, dark chocolate and dried mint leaves, umami notes of smoky soy and a ferrous, mineral lift at the finish. Aged 22 months in 70% new French oak.
