Veteran winemaker Mary Derby earned her stripes establishing Spring Valley and now has nearly 20 years guiding the winemaking at woman-owned and -managed Dama. This Syrah begins with an intense nose with all the usual Rocks District suspects: grilled and smoke aromas, black fruit, game, garrigue and stemmy vegetal notes. The palate is rich and ripe, with a more subtle Rocks profile that emphasizes black plum fruit, mouthfeel and savoury flavors of spicy black pepper, tobacco and stone. Tannins are high, but more like bouclé than virgin wool. Stoney Vine Vineyard also provides fruit for fellow Walla Walla producers Dusted Valley and Sleight of Hand.
