This Walla Walla Valley Syrah from Peter Devison comes from Stoney Vine Vineyard and shows the famous Rocks District terroir but does so in hushed whispers rather than shouts—gorgeous umami notes of roasted nori, black olives and brine, and smoky violets. The palate is sleek and savoury. Medium-bodied and rich with hints of char, smoky soy sauce and roasted sea salt. Black olives, brine and rich, ripe black figs carry into a finish marked by eucalyptus and dried anise—an intensely layered and beautifully fresh Syrah.
