A gorgeous bottle from Domaine Serene, the Evenstad Reserve bottling is a masterclass in building texture in Oregon Chardonnay. The 2020 vintage was challenging for the Willamette Valley, with most producers not making Pinot Noir owing to the wildfire smoke (which mainly impacts wines via their skins). This is one of a few Chardonnays I've tasted, which shows what a glorious vintage it was. Aromas of petrichor, lemon cream, savoury and smoky grilled orange introduce a beautifully textured palate. Rich lemongrass and lemon oil flavours intertwine with savoury notes of smoky grilled lemon, faint hints of cardamom, a whisper of nutmeg is picked up by bracing acidity and clarity delivered by the minerality that dominates the finish.
