Opulently ripe and dripping with umami depth, the Reynvaan Contender comes from the In The Rocks Vineyard, which, not surprisingly, is in The Rocks District. This Syrah sees a bit of Marsanne (3%)in a cofermentation, aged 18 months in primarily neutral French oak—aromatics of smoky venison, plum reduction and rich tamari soy sauce with notes of singed violets. The palate is dense and brooding, with briny black olives, iodine and hot iron—pure hedonism with a thinking person's aromatics.
