The 2023 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is surprisingly serious for an appellation bottling. The core of the blend is sourced from Wenzlau Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, a steep, ocean-influenced site perched above the Santa Ynez River and surrounded by vineyards such as Rita’s Crown, Mt. Carmel and Sea Smoke. Chalky, marine-influenced soils and a cool, wind-funnelled climate add salinity and a precise linear backbone of acid with a flinty, gently reductive edge. This wine clearly shows the benefit of time in barrel and élevage: there’s a delicate complexity of citrus zest and cream along with sourdough and leesy yeast notes that give the wine breadth and savoury depth.
