Michael Shaps bought this historic winery, founded 1976, in 2018. Unlike the iconic clay of Central Virginia and the rocky slopes of Northern Virginia, Shenandoah – the driest county in the state – features skeins of limestone thought to have some of the greatest potential for winegrowing. Based on Tannat (40%) with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it shows terrific balance of dark fruit, earthy notes and appealing farmyard hints.
