Red-fruited and well-knit, this Cabernet Franc-based blend comes from the Red Mountain estate of Avennia, long known as the Tapteil property. The older vine Cabernet Franc is a Red Mountain treasure to winemaker Chris Peterson, along with 38% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine spends 20 months in primarily neutral French oak, revealing the site's nuances and Aromas of choke cherries, smoky blood orange and whiffs of pencil lead and flint with a note of eucalyptus and cedar plank. The palate is refined in the face of Red Mountain power, with red berries, dried lavender, and an intense citrus brightness. Where the 21 leaned towards savoury elegance, the 2022 shows red-fruited refinement, offering a glimpse of the versatility of this site, one that the Avennia team is just beginning to revel in.
