Unlike more recent incarnations of Pere de Famille, this has a small percentage of Malbec alongside the mainstay components of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Happily, there’s still a residual hit of nice primary blackcurrant fruit on this 2005, alongside the savoury bottle age flavours of dried tree bark and mulch. The alcohol is perhaps a little too pronounced, and the wine feels a little clunky, but there’s good balance between the acidity and the still fleshy tannins.
