Earthy and mineral-driven, this wine leads with aromas of cracked black pepper, eucalyptus, wet river rock and wild blueberry and raspberry. Deep flavors of game, a savory herbaceousness and concentrated cherry cola follow, blanketing the palate. The grapes are sourced from loam, gravel and rock-choked soils at Stoneridge vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA, an area known for wines of great concentration (and famous for Charles Smith’s many chart-toppers). With fairly grippy tannins and a dry, smooth finish, it showed best a full day after opening.
