From Joseph Phelps and Tablas Creek Syrah clones grown at the family’s Les Gosses estate vineyard, this wine is a lustrous ruby colour with a savoury nose of fennel and green herbs, clove and black fruit. Barrel ageing took place in 47% new oak barrels and puncheons (mostly American, with 5% French) for 21 months, contributing a nice balance of fruit and woody notes, with a pleasing weight on the palate. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, sun-warmed bramble vine and baking spice, with firm tannins and a light, lifted finish. From a labour-intensive, biodynamic-certified vineyard in one of the state’s premium appellations, this Syrah is an excellent example of Washington’s high quality-to-value ratio.
