This appropriately named wine comes from the northeast-facing block of WeatherEye vineyard on Red Mountain, the threshold where that sub-AVA transitions into the greater Columbia Valley appellation. Red Mountain is one of the hottest places in Washington to grow grapes, but this wine is a different creature (much like vineyard manager Ryan Johnson’s original label art depicting a blissed-out coyote Jimmy Hendrix). The fruit is a field blend of various Syrah clones, picked at low Brix, achieving moderate alcohol levels. Winemaker Keith Johnson, of Devium in Walla Walla, used low-intervention techniques: 100% whole bunch, 100% neutral oak, native yeast, no fining or filtering, not even even punch-down tools – 'just hands and feet', he says. The result is a wine with an earthy, herbal character of lavender, desert shrubs and bright red fruit, like sun-warmed raspberries on the vine. The Syrah was co-fermented with a bit of Mourvèdre, contributing to the wine’s textural tannins and aging potential.
