The Columbia Gorge is a special place, with ancient volcanic soils, windswept rows of grapevines and the gleaming Columbia River reflecting light back into the vineyards. This is the sense of place that sprang to mind as I tasted this elegant wine; co-founder Poppie Mantone describes it as 'more like Northern Rhône' than the winery’s other bottlings, such as the Boushey Vineyard Syrah out of hotter central Washington. But to me this wine shows none of the austerity of Northern Rhône Syrahs. Its beautiful aromas are equal parts floral, fruity and earthy, with notes of violet, game, black pepper, cocoa and raspberry jam. The free-run juice was separated to age in neutral cigar-shaped oak barrels, contributing softness, gentle tannins and a round mouthfeel. A refreshingly modest alcohol level and a vaguely feral character add to this singular expression of Syrah.
